The Promise - Jane Hirshfield
Suggested by Inanisvoid
Stay, I said
to the cut flowers.
They bowed
their heads lower.
Stay, I said to the spider,
who fled.
Stay, leaf.
It reddened,
embarrassed for me and itself.
Stay, I said to my body.
It sat as a dog does,
obedient for a moment,
soon starting to tremble.
Stay, to the earth
of riverine valley meadows,
of fossiled escarpments,
of limestone and sandstone.
It looked back
with a changing expression, in silence.
Stay, I said to my loves.
Each answered,
Always.
Suggester's comments:
"I think there are quite a few ways you can interpret this poem, and that it will speak to people in a very different way at different times in their life."
Jane Hirshfield was born 24 February 1953 and is an American poet, essayist and translator.
May I have this dance?I never seen a heart left unbroken
Or eyes that never cried
Not a nightmare left unawakened
In this town of lies
But don't fret,I've hidden all the knives
Just let me take your hand,might I ask
If I may have this dance
For the rest of our lives
Just be happy
Cross your fingers and breath
Take the world off your shoulders
I swear I'll never leave.
Let the regrets disappear
It's all far from us now
For once I'll watch you smile
Forget the cold hearted town

Do you remember when we were younger?
The days were brighter.
The world was simpler.
Everything that mattered made sense.
How have things changed so much?
Do you remember those two little girls?

When I am Dead, my Dearest - Christina Georgina Rosetti

When I am dead, my dearest,
Sing no sad songs for me;
Plant thou no roses at my head,
Nor shady cypress tree:
Be the green grass above me
With showers and dewdrops wet;
And if thou wilt, remember,

We met, hand to hand,
We clasped hands close and fast,
As close as oak and ivy stand;
But it is past:
Come day, come night, day comes at last.
We loosed hand from hand,
We parted face from face;
